Giulia Tillack is a student at Carey Baptist Grammar School in Melbourne and is about to embark on a two year program leading to the International Baccalaureate Diploma. She has opted to take Higher Level Visual Art as one of her subject choices. Giulia is a high achiever across the full academic spectrum. However, she has not taken art at all in recent years and decided she might be missing something important. With the enthusiastic support of her parents Giulia came to BCAC with the intention to try to orient herself artistically, to gain technical and creative skills and ideas and boost her self confidence prior to starting the rigorous IB Visual Art course.

Mr and Mrs and Giulia Tracenti Tillack from Melbourne bought one of my most important ‘Landmark Paintings’, titled ‘THE AWAKENING’, 1997, oil on canvas. See - brucesherrattpaintings.weebly.com/
This addition to the family’s collection has quite a history. Painted in 1997 and exhibited in a retrospective exhibition of my work at the Duta Fine Arts Foundation in Jakarta in 1998, the painting marks an important landmark and turning point in the development of my work, containing as it does, influences from all the countries and cultures I had experienced up to that point. My roots as a surrealist painter are also reflected in this painting. The exhibition was sponsored by various major British companies having operations throughout Indonesia. In 1998 the Suharto dictatorship that had ruled Indonesia for 3 decades collapsed, signaling the end of an era and a new awakening in Indonesia. The event coincided with some major changes in my own life and art, hence the title ‘The Awakening’. The following introduction by His Excellency Mr Robin Christopher, British Ambassador to Indonesia at that time appeared in the catalogue for the 1998 exhibition: |
Open Studio Night at BCAC Art Center & Gallery, Ubud, Bali Center for Artistic Creativity.
A social & networking event involving the creation of a collaborative painting measuring 750 x 60 centimeters inspired by the shortest poem in the English language - 'Me,we' by Muhammad Ali. Also inspired by the new Positive Psychology and FLOW. Participants first viewed slides of symbolic art by children, established art masters & aboriginal Australian painters. The importance of symbolism and icons in the development of expression through drawing for all human beings was first explored, together with the easy availability of symbol drawing for all, regardless of artistic skill and/or natural talent.
