International School of Kuala Lumpur OUTREACH Program at BCAC
A Photo exposition of a 6 day 'OUTREACH', or 'SCHOOL WITHOUT WALLS' program at BCAC - October 16 to 23, 2010. (8 days including a day each for arrival/settling in and departure). This was a mixed, art-based program for grade 9 students that focused primarily on art skills and individual creativity. The central theme was MYTHS, MYTHOLOGY and FANTASY on the 'Island of the Gods'. The program involved Balinese history and culture, ritual dance performances, Eco-cycling, a Tree-Top Rope activity, trekking, working with disadvantaged children and the physically and mentally challenged and with a group of students studying to prepare for a career in the tourist industry. Students also created their own original batik T-shirts.
On Day 1 students took an Eco-cycling trip, starting from Mount Batur and Kintamani, one of the highest points on the island. On the way up they visited a coffee plantation and saw how Balinese coffee is grown, roasted and prepared. They also learned how ingenious fruits are cultivated and used. After breakfast overlooking Lake Batur, with spectacular views of the mountains, they began their slow descent on mountain cycles through rice fields and traditional villages. Our guide, Pak Made was a mine of information on Balinese customs and beliefs, topography and how Balinese villages and family home compounds are arranged Next day they began learning new creative art skills that are rooted in Balinese tradition and aesthetics. All the experiences were bound together by students generating their own, highly original creative art and sharing the skills acquired with the groups of children and others they “reached out to” during the program. There was a final traditional Balinese farewell feast held at BCAC, with live traditional Balinese bamboo music and a concluding discussion and slide show of the week’s activities.
