Art Therapy
Bruce Sherratt has a strong background in the psychology of artistic creativity, having done extensive work on Fantasy in art education at university. Bruce’s background in art therapy is primarily Jungian and also includes Freudian and Gestalt theory. Bruce carried out extensive research into the ‘Object Relations’ school of thought, especially the importance of fantasy in the creative process.
Considering Bruce is a Surrealist painter this is not surprising. Bruce has worked with maladjusted adolescents and adults. |

His approach to art teaching in general is based primarily on the art therapeutic model, although Bruce covers all aspects of the visual arts. All artistic activity is potentially therapeutic. Color can be extremely therapeutic to work with creatively and at BCAC this is the most popular approach. But drawing: line, shape, form, all kinds of painting, e.g., acrylics, oils, pure pigment, water colors are available.
Abstract Family Portrait
Using abstract lines and shapes drawn in charcoal this lady has expressed the personalities of the various members of her family and the relationships between them.
By adding colour she gains further expression, for example orange means lively/happy, red suggests anger/temper, blue is logical, and the long, green curvy form at the lower left indicates a peaceful, calm personality.

"Explosions"
Unlocking and exploring fantasy and imagination can be extremely therapeutic. We usually work either individually or in small groups with particular themes, such as stories or ideas from myths and legends.
However sometimes each individual takes a very personal approach, and normally we share and discus the work after completion.

"Cat Bird"
This young man has practiced controlled line work with ink using a loose bamboo Chinese brush on canvas. He then looked briefly at many examples of mythical creatures. His task is now to create a creature of his own that is unique. Such images invariably both reveal characteristics of personality and allow the artist to express and communicate both conscious and subconscious issues and thoughts. These are brought to consciousness through discussion and analysis. The exercise can be great fun; on the other hand unexpected, previously unrealized thoughts, memories and emotions are triggered in this way.
